If you are fighting monsters with low defense and already landing most of your attacks, increasing your Strength bonus will improve your damage output. Weapons Should Always Be Your Priority


When upgrading melee gear, your weapon should almost always come first. A powerful weapon paired with average armor usually outperforms a weak weapon with expensive armor.


After upgrading your weapon, the next priorities are typically:

Special attack weapons


This upgrade order works for most stages of the game and ensures you get the biggest damage improvements for your gold.


Special attack weapons become more important later in the game. Some examples include heavy damage weapons, defense-reduction tools, and healing options. These special attacks consume energy from the spec bar, which slowly regenerates during combat.


Early Game Progression (Free-to-Play)


If you're starting in free-to-play, the progression path is very straightforward. Simply upgrade your armor and weapons as your Attack and Defense levels increase.


Typical gear progression looks like this:


Iron gear at level 1


Steel gear at level 5


Black gear at level 10


Mithril gear at level 20


Adamant gear at level 30


Rune gear at level 40


Whenever possible, use a Rune Scimitar or similar scimitar-type weapon. Scimitars attack faster than longswords or battleaxes, which leads to more serious damage over time.


Two small but valuable early upgrades include the Amulet of Strength, which boosts your damage output, and Climbing Boots, obtained from the Death Plateau quest.


One of the best early-game boosts comes from completing the Waterfall Quest. This quest provides a huge amount of Attack and Strength experience, allowing players to reach level 30 in both skills without any combat grinding.


Early Members Upgrades


Once you become a member, the number of gear options expands dramatically. One of the first items most players should obtain is the Amulet of Glory. It provides accuracy, strength bonus, prayer bonus, and useful teleport options, making it one of the most efficient early upgrades.


Another useful item is the Combat Bracelet, which offers both accuracy and strength bonuses without any level requirements.


After completing The Fremennik Trials, players can equip the Berserker Helm, a helmet that provides valuable strength bonuses. This item is eventually replaced by the Helm of Neitiznot, unlocked after completing The Fremennik Isles.


The Mid-Game Melee Setup


A huge milestone for most players is unlocking the Dragon Scimitar, which requires completing Monkey Madness I. This weapon has long been a classic mid-game choice thanks to its speed and strong slash bonus.


Pairing it with the Dragon Defender, obtained from the Warriors' Guild, dramatically boosts both accuracy and strength. This off-hand item is one of the best upgrades for its cost.


Another major upgrade comes from Fighter Torso, earned through the Barbarian Assault. It provides a powerful strength bonus and remains useful even in later stages of the game.
